How to Use the Length Nesting Interface Effectively
What Is the Length Nesting Interface?
The Length Nesting module is used to:
- Automatically generate cutting layouts from a shop batch
- Minimize waste and maximize material usage
- Create printed reports for cutting and remnant handling
Each nesting session is associated with a specific batch number.
Launching the Nesting Module
To open the Length Nesting screen:
- Go to Home > Tools > Nesting
- Enter a valid Batch Number from the Cutting List module
You will be prompted to load the materials and review the shapes included in the batch.
Nesting Workflow Overview
Step 1: Review Material List
- All available shapes and specs from the batch are listed
- You can remove items manually before nesting
Step 2: Choose Stock Lengths
- Select from the predefined stock table, or
- Enter custom lengths manually
Step 3: Set Nesting Parameters
- Trim Allowance: Default cut loss per part (e.g., 1/8″)
- Remnant Min Length: Cutoffs longer than this will be saved
- Remnant Tagging: Choose to print ID or barcode (if enabled)
Step 4: Run Nesting
- Click Start Nesting
- The system generates optimized cut layouts and summaries
Reviewing and Adjusting Results
Once nesting is complete:
- View each bar’s cut sequence and drop amount
- Use Re-Nest to try alternative configurations
- Modify priorities or stock availability and rerun as needed
Use caution when editing nested bars manually. This may reduce optimization.
Printing Reports and Tags
From the output screen, you can print:
- Nesting summary reports
- Shop tickets for each bar
- Remnant labels or barcodes
You can also export results to file if your system integrates with a saw or inventory tool.
